EXTENDED PROFILE
» APPEARANCE: Standing 5'4", Lanie appears more a little more petite than she really is when she's standing next to her much taller friend, Kate Beckett, who happens to be about 5 inches taller than Lanie. She's African American and her skin is a pretty caramel color. She's pretty with brown eyes and long dark brown hair (most likely a weave). When in the Morgue, she can be seen in scrubs - pink or blue normally - and when she's out on a scene, she's normally in dress pants, blouses and matching jackets. Very work appropriate. When she's not at work, she's been known to dress up - pretty dresses with v-necks, showing a bit of cleavage and bright colors. No matter what, Lanie always makes an effort to look good and it shows.
» PERSONALITY: Doctor Lanie Parish is a Medical Examiner and a Forensics Analyst for the NYPD. She's often described as sassy, outspoken with a sarcastic sense of humor. She's not your average Medical Examiner as the show has worked to portray her as more than just the person working in the morgue. She's shown as being very human with a good sense of humor, sassy comebacks and advice, rather than just a person who's there to spew a bunch of medical jargon. She's not afraid to show her sassy side or that she's very serious about her job.

Lanie and Kate are best friends, as well as colleagues, and Lanie is constantly trying to get Kate to go out to places with her - normally without much luck. She's been seen giving Kate fashion advice a couple of times - telling Kate it wouldn't kill her to wear lipstick and also when she's trying to help her find a dress to wear to a fancy party with Castle and ends up telling her: "When I come back you better not be wearing your prom dress". She's attempted to set Kate up on several dates, thinking her friend needs to get out there and get a social life. She just wants the best for Kate and wants her to get out there and expand her social horizons rather than focusing so exclusively on her work. She's also been shown to be there when Kate just needs to talk and seems to be ready to offer advice to Kate in different matters. She's even taken to being mad at people Kate has been mad at, like when Kate was mad at Castle for investigating her mother's murder, Lanie straight out tells Castle: "Na-uh, you don't get to say hi to me, I'm just doing my girl a favor".

She is a very honest person. She's very big in doing what you feel and not hiding how you feel. She doesn't think people should be ashamed of their feelings and if someone likes someone, they should just tell them. If they don't like them, tell them. This is something she's told Kate a couple of times and which is why she's always seeming to push Kate into admitting how she feels about Castle. She's mumbled that 'you might not see it, but I do' after talking to Kate about Castle. Even though Kate hasn't said anything, Lanie's seen it and she never misses the opportunity to point out that Kate and Castle should be sleeping together in her own sassy and very direct way too many times to actually list them all.

Lanie doesn't take crap from anyone and isn't above telling people: I'm gonna smack you. Even if she doesn't say anything verbally, she more than lets others know exactly how she feels with body language and/or dirty looks. Castle and Detective Javier Esposito get a good deal of those looks because of their own smart ass comments, and these looks happen almost every episode she's in. I think a lot of Lanie's attitude comes from the fact that she works in a male dominated field and with a bunch of cops, though the creators might have very well had her always had attitude.

Lanie takes her job very seriously. She's very intelligent, and as a Medical Examiner has to have a very strong stomach. She once pulled a stake out of a man's chest without even flinching, and another time handled the autopsy of a con man whose face had been blown off. She spends a good deal of her time with dead bodies and figuring out how they died, but it doesn't seem to bother her too much as long as she can get out of there at the end of the day and do her own thing. She doesn't like it when Castle makes jokes about her job and is often seen giving him annoyed looks when he does it in the Morgue. She can also be laid back however; as illustrated by not only her romantic relationship with Esposito later in season 3, but also by her revealing that she bet in the pool about Castle and Beckett getting together and that she lost a lot of money.

Lanie has always been a big fan of Castle (though not as big as Kate Beckett), and definitely thinks that he's attractive, intelligent (most of the time) and worldly... But most of all she thinks that he's in love with her best friend. She finds him amusing but isn't afraid to cut him off and be snappy with him when Kate is mad at him. Over the seasons, she's grown very comfortable around him and isn't afraid to tell him to shut up or threaten him with sharp objects if he gets on her nerves and she's given him the nickname of writerboy. They don't show her relationship with too many people outside of the central cast, but it's obvious that she at least tolerates Ryan and that there's a flirty, sexual tension between her and Esposito (which gets taken care of in Season 3). She's really not afraid to snap off on any of the the central cast though and has told Esposito that she was going to smack him after he made a comment about her wearing a skirt up in a tree.

She obviously has a social life outside of work as she's been seen coming to a crime scene wearing fancy date clothes. She seems to be confident and more adventurous in her sexuality and has even stated once that she likes chocolate and whipped cream bikinis, but nothing sticky (while investigating the death of a Dominatrix). She also enjoys watching TV and is a big fan of the Soap Opera "Temptation Lane" and even gets annoyed when the show kills off one of her favorite characters. She also enjoys watching the reality dance show "A Night of Dance" and we find out that at one point that she had dreams of becoming a Prima Ballerina but then puberty hit and 'the girls' showed up.

While Lanie has no problems when it comes to dating (as stated before she's been shown coming to a scene from a date and in season three it's found out that she has a thing going on with Esposito) she has some commitment issues. She obviously enjoys the dating scene, but once it starts to become very serious or the 'M' word (marriage) is mentioned, Lanie will end things. She does this later on in season four when she breaks up with Esposito after Jenny, Ryan's fiance, asks Lanie and Esposito when they're getting married. No reasons are given for why Lanie is like this, but the actress has speculated that something happened in Lanie's past to make her like this but has also stated that the creator is pretty much keeping her in the dark about Lanie's past and what motivates her in that area.

It is pretty obvious that Lanie is a bit vain. She's always looking her best and in season five when Kate and Castle are being followed around by a documentary crew, Lanie certainly hams it up in front of the camera, posing several times. She takes great pride in her appearance and always looks well put together, even if she's called to a crime scene in the middle of the night (like time she was called in because of a body at the cemetery.). Even after a tumble in bed with Esposito (in season 3), Lanie looks pretty damn good.

Later in the show it's shown that Lanie has a more nurturing and mentoring side to her. She takes Alexis Castle under her wing when the younger girl decided to do her internship at the Corner's Office. She'd take Alexis to crime scenes and would take her through every process a body would go through with a Medical Examiner. She showed great patience, more so with Alexis' father poking his nose around, and had no problem explaining the different procedures to her (and didn't kick Castle, so that was good). She's very understanding with her, for example when Alexis is freaking out over a missing body and Lanie assures her that it really wasn't her fault and that crazy things happen all the time. She showed a lot of respect for the younger girl and even stated that she didn't understand how somebody so childish could have a daughter that carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her nurturing side is also shown a lot with Kate when Lanie tries to give her advice regarding Castle after listening to her friend's worries about him later on in season 5 when Castle was an actual suspect in a homicide case. She asked Kate if Kate really thought that Castle was able to do something like that and has on more than one occasion pointed out that Castle has pretty much always had Kate's back.

Overall Lanie is a strong, independent woman who isn't afraid to speak her mind and is always there when her friends need her and often times when they don't.
